HACKS

Yes I'm overriding my initial birthday post so fast with political nonsense, but an article linked on Mefi originally linked from The New Republic intrigued me.
Since it requires registration, I'm going to provide it for you instead.
Geez christ, I'm having problems finding a job, maybe I should date his daughters...

The events of the past months have awakened the press to the true nature of the Bush administration. It is overrun with hacks--that is, government officials with waifish resumés padded like the Michelin man, whose political connections have won them important national responsibilities. But, in the face of this rush to flay the Bush hacks, we should consider their achievements.

To fully appreciate the virtues of this administration, we must first recall the administration that came before. Back in the 1990s, Bill Clinton recruited a small army of Arkansans and Rhodes scholars to the West Wing. Although there was the occasional kindergarten buddy who was out of his depth, most of these FOBs (friends of Bill) were insufferable wonks who never let you forget their dense resumés. President Bush put his finger on the smug mindset of these Clinton meritocrats when he said, "They're all of a sudden smarter than the average person because they happen to have an Ivy League degree."

Now we can consider this problem solved. The Bush era has taken government out of the hands of the hyper-qualified and given it back to the common man. This new breed may not have what the credentialists sneeringly call "relevant experience." Their alma maters may not always be "accredited." But they have something the intellectual snobs of yore never had: loyalty. If not loyalty to country, then at least loyalty to party and to the guy who got them the job. And their loyalty has been rewarded: Even if they fail, they know they can move up the chain until they find a job they can succeed in or until a major American city is destroyed, whichever comes first.

The hackocracy, of course, reflects the virtues of its architect, George W. Bush. Like Michael Brown and lesser known hacks, the president hasn't allowed personal setbacks to stymie him. The old-fashioned values of fortitude and family have given him the strength to rebound from a doomed oil company called Arbusto, a doomed congressional candidacy, and catastrophic failures at Harken Energy. That may be why, while cronies populate every presidency, no administration has etched the principles of hackocracy into its governing philosophy as deeply as this one. If there's an underappreciated corner of the bureaucracy to fill, it has found just the crony (or college roommate of a crony), party operative (or cousin of a party operative) to fill it. To honor this achievement, we've drawn up a list of the 15 biggest Bush administration hacks--from the highest levels of government to the civil servant rank and file. The tnr 15 is a diverse group--from the assistant secretary of commerce who started his career by supplying Bush with Altoids to the Republican National Committee chair-turned-Veterans Affairs secretary who forgot about wounded Iraq war vets--but they all share two things: responsibility and inexperience.

Although he could not possibly have envisioned what Bush has accomplished, Theodore Roosevelt delivered the single most poetic appreciation of this hackocratic style: "It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, and comes short again and again...."

Bush, who may or may not be familiar with the Bull Moose, has lived and governed by this dictum. Never before have we so rewarded the valiant striver who comes up short by placing the fate of the nation in his hands. Never before have so many gotten so far with so little.

15: Israel Hernandez
Assistant Secretary for Trade Promotion and Director General of the United States and Foreign Commercial Service, Department of Commerce (confirmation pending)

Fresh out of college and seeking a job on George W. Bush's 1994 Texas gubernatorial campaign, Israel Hernandez showed up an hour early for his interview with the candidate. Impressed by his punctuality, Bush hired Hernandez within days and eventually invited him to live with the Bush family in their Dallas home, where Hernandez reportedly became like an older brother to Jenna and Barbara Bush. Serving as Bush's travel aide for the next few years, "He was always there with the Altoids, the speech box, the schedule, whatever I needed," Bush later wrote in his autobiography. After getting a master's degree at (where else?) the George Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M (named after H.W.), Hernandez--or, as Bush called him, "Altoid Boy"--joined Bush's 2000 presidential campaign and later worked in the White House as an assistant to Karl Rove. There, he helped choreograph Bush's events and was once made part of the first lady's official delegation on a trip to Europe so that he could keep an eye on Jenna. All of which, apparently, was good preparation for managing more than 1,800 employees in more than 80 countries, because, earlier this year, Bush nominated the 35-year-old Hernandez to serve as an assistant secretary of Commerce and to run the United States and Foreign Commercial Service, the federal government's key export promotion agency.



14: Andrew Maner
Chief Financial Officer, Department of Homeland Security

Andrew Maner comes to his job with unimpeachable credentials--not in finance or accounting, admittedly, but as a dues-payer in the Bush family empire. In the first Bush administration, Maner helped to plan presidential travel and served as a junior press aide. Later, he followed the defeated George H.W. Bush back to Texas to be a spokesman and political fixer for the ex-president. After several private sector years working in information technology and procurement, he took over the U.S. Customs Office of Trade Relations, whose mission is to foster "positive relationships with the international trade community." Billing himself as a trade expert, Maner called the Customs gig a "logical next step in [my] career." Less logical, however, was his leap (after a short stint as chief of staff to the Customs commissioner) to managing DHS's sprawling $40 billion budget. Given his slim management background, it's convenient that Maner landed the only Cabinet department CFO slot that doesn't require Senate confirmation. Perhaps it also explains why, when DHS officials recently unveiled a revamped organizational chart, Maner's office was accidentally omitted. (Hack bonus: "Of all the things we do in the Department, charts may not be our strength," said the Department's undersecretary for management, Janet Hale.)



13: Claire Buchan
Chief of Staff, Department of Commerce

As deputy press secretary at the White House, Claire Buchan gained a reputation as a kept-in-the-dark spokesbot who was often relegated to baby-sitting reporters on long trips. But all that changed last spring, when Buchan was promoted to chief of staff at the Commerce Department, where she now helps the secretary oversee a $6.3 billion budget and some 38,000 employees. Buchan owes this stroke of good fortune to her years in the Bush family trenches. Previously, she served as a public affairs underling for the Treasury Department under former President Bush, a flack for the Republican National Committee, and (during the Clinton years) an image czar for the lawn care, extermination, and appliance repair company ServiceMaster. Some of Buchan's erstwhile colleagues in the White House press corps were left speechless when her new assignment was announced in February. One White House reporter who worked closely with Buchan for five years called her "the most useless in a Bush universe of enforced uselessness. She took empty banality to a new low."



12: Paul Hoffman
Deputy Assistant Secretary for Fish and Wildlife and Parks, Department of the Interior

Paul Hoffman is an avid angler, hunter, skier, and horseman. So it was only natural to tap this former chief of the Chamber of Commerce in Cody, Wyoming, (population 9,000) to help run the National Park Service. Sure, Hoffman had no parks experience other than recreating in them and, as head of the Cody Chamber, advocating for more snowmobiles in nearby Yellowstone National Park. But he had spent four years in the 1980s working as the state director for then-Wyoming Representative Dick Cheney. Since arriving at the Interior Department in 2002, Hoffman has demonstrated a knack for thinking outside the box. In April 2003, he went against the wishes of the staff of Yellowstone and asked the U.N. World Heritage Committee to remove the park from its "In Danger List." Last year, he overruled geologists at the Grand Canyon National Park and instructed the park's visitor centers to stock a creationist book that explained how God made the canyon 6,000 years ago, ordering up a flood to wipe out "the wickedness of man." And, this year, Hoffman pushed for wholesale revisions to the Park Service's management policies. Instead of giving priority to protecting natural resources, Hoffman proposed that managers emphasize multiple uses for their parks--including snowmobiling, Jet-Skiing, grazing, drilling, and mining. After Hoffman's proposed reforms set off a firestorm of criticism from Park Service employees and members of Congress--"The inmates are in charge of the asylum," one Park Service retiree complained--the Bush administration claimed that Hoffman's suggestions were "no longer in play" and that he had merely been playing "devil's advocate."



11: Patrick Rhode
Acting Deputy Director Federal Emergency Management Agency

As acting deputy director of fema, 36-year-old Patrick Rhode had, until recently, the unenviable job of backstopping the hapless Michael Brown, a man who needed much backstopping. Unfortunately, it's not clear that Rhode is much more qualified than Brown to be managing the nation's worst disasters. Before joining fema, the biggest disaster he had helped manage was the Small Business Administration (see Hector Barreto)--and even that was something of a stretch. Rhode entered federal government in 2001 as deputy director of advance operations for the Bush White House, a job he had also held for Bush's 2000 campaign. Never fear, though: Rhode has covered disasters--as a TV anchor for local network affiliates in Alabama and Arkansas, in which capacity he developed "an acute interest in what responders do in times of crises." Perhaps not acute enough. He recently said that >fema's response to Katrina was "probably one of the most efficient and effective responses in the country's history."



10: Steven Law
Deputy Secretary, Department of Labor

Since 2004, Steven Law has helped run a department with 17,000 employees and an annual budget of over $50 billion. Pretty good for a guy who started out as a lowly Capitol Hill legislative aide. In 1990, Law's boss, Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell, tapped him to serve as campaign manager for his reelection race. Law didn't disappoint, running a notably nasty campaign that insinuated McConnell's Democratic opponent was both mentally ill and a drug addict. Law returned to Washington as McConnell's chief of staff, and, six years later, when McConnell was chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, he made Law the group's executive director, relying on him for help in vacuuming up campaign contributions for Republican Senate candidates and thwarting campaign finance reform legislation. In each job he did for McConnell, Law proved to be an unusually dedicated--and worshipful--worker. Asked once by Campaigns & Elections to name his political heroes, Law answered: "Ronald Reagan, for his vision of America; Abraham Lincoln, for his moral statesmanship; and Mitch McConnell, for his principle and tenacity." It was little wonder, then, that, in 2001, the newly appointed Labor Secretary Elaine Chao--who happens to be McConnell's wife--hired Law as her chief of staff, a stepping stone to his current position; after all, once you've found such loyal help, you want to keep it in the family.



9: Hal Stratton
Chairman, Consumer Product Safety Commission

A former state representative and attorney general in New Mexico, Hal Stratton never asked for his current job, protecting American citizens from such dangers as lead-laced toy jewelry and flammable Halloween costumes. Instead, the former geology major who went on to co-chair the local Lawyers for Bush during the 2000 campaign initially wanted a job in the Interior Department. "That didn't work out," he told the Albuquerque Journal, "but I told them, 'Don't count me out' ... and they came up with this." "This" being the not-unimportant position of deciding which of 15,000 types of consumer products pose a health risk and might need to be recalled. Shortly before Stratton's confirmation hearing, Senator Ron Wyden expressed concern that Stratton "has no demonstrable track record on public safety." (Bill Clinton's cpsc chief, Ann Brown, spent 20 years as a consumer advocate and served as vice president of the Consumer Federation of America.) But now he does have a track record: rare public hearings and a paucity of new safety regulations, as well as regular (often industry-sponsored) travels to such destinations as China, Costa Rica, Belgium, Spain, and Mexico. But at least Stratton won't let personal bias influence him: Despite saying that he wouldn't let his own daughters play with water yo-yos--rubber toys that are outlawed in several countries because of concerns that children could be strangled by them--he refused to ban them in the United States.



8: Mark McKinnon
Member, Broadcasting Board of Governors (confirmation pending)

The Broadcasting Board of Governors oversees Voice of America and other U.S. media beamed to the Middle East; and, in the spirit of accurately representing the United States, it reserves seats for members of both major political parties. For one of the four Democratic slots, President Bush recently nominated Mark McKinnon, or "M-Cat" as he affectionately calls him. M-Cat's Democratic credentials, however, are somewhat wanting. McKinnon's career highlights include overseeing media strategy for Bush's two presidential bids, in which capacity he masterminded a spot predicting that John Kerry would "Weaken [the] Fight Against Terrorists." And, in last year's campaign, his company, Maverick Media, accepted over $177 million in fees from Bush and the Republican National Committee--money we assume was not intended to help return the Democrats to power.



7: Stewart Simonson
Assistant Secretary for Public Health and Emergency Preparedness, Department of Health and Human Services

According to his official biography, Stewart Simonson is the Health and Human Services Department's point man "on matters related to bioterrorism and other public health emergencies." Hopefully, he has taken crash courses on smallpox and avian flu, because, prior to joining HHS in 2001, Simonson's background was not in public health, but ... public transit. He'd previously been a top official at the delay-plagued, money-hemorrhaging passenger rail company Amtrak. Before that, he was an adviser to Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson, specializing in crime and prison policy. When Thompson became HHS secretary in 2001, he hired Simonson as a legal adviser and promoted him to his current post shortly before leaving the Department last year. Simonson's biography boasts that he "supervised policy development for Project BioShield," a program designed to speed the manufacture of crucial vaccines and antidotes. "That effort, however, has by most accounts bogged down and shown few results," The Washington Post reported last month.

6: Hector Barreto
Administrator, Small Business Administration

No one can accuse Hector Barreto of being unfamiliar with small business. His Los Angeles firm, Barreto Insurance & Financial Services Company, had only ten employees. Alas, now that he is in charge of a bigger operation--the Small Business Administration (SBA) has over 3,000 employees, a budget of about $600 million, and a portfolio of loans totaling $45 billion--Barreto is struggling. Last year, the SBA failed to notify Congress that it needed additional funding for its largest and most popular loan program and was forced to temporarily shutter it because, as Barreto's spokesperson explained, it was "out of money." Meanwhile, the SBA was doing such a poor job managing the $5 billion in loans the government set aside to help small businesses recover from September 11 that, according to an Associated Press investigation, the vast majority of the money went to businesses not affected by the terrorist attacks--including a South Dakota country radio station, a Utah dog boutique, and more than 100 Dunkin' Donuts and Subway sandwich shops. Last month, the Senate Small Business Committee, prompted by complaints from Gulf Coast small-business owners, held hearings on the SBA's response to Hurricane Katrina. Barreto pledged that his agency would approve Katrina-related loans in days, not months, but a SBA deputy conceded in late September that, out of 12,000 loan applications from small businesses affected by the hurricane, the SBA had so far approved only 76.



5: David Wilkins
American Ambassador to Canada

An unspoken rule dictates that politically appointed ambassadors should be seen and not heard--or, at the very least, not heard provoking international incidents with close U.S. allies. But David Wilkins--a former South Carolina legislator whose chief contribution to world affairs before this year was raising $200,000 for President Bush's 2004 campaign--is not one to stand on ceremony. Though he'd only been to Canada once (Niagara Falls) prior to his nomination in April, the Bush Ranger assured Congress that "I won't be afraid to talk about the tough issues." A man of his word, Wilkins promptly escalated the two countries' dispute over softwood lumber by accusing Canadians of being overly emotional and by threatening an all-out trade war that would have affected multiple industries, from broadcasting to eggs. The Canadian government fought back, however, and, although generally disinclined toward mea culpas--"You talking about regrets by the United States?" he asked a Canadian reporter with incredulity--Wilkins eventually admitted his approach to the lumber dispute had been flawed. "My attempt to bring the emotion down increased the emotion," he said. To demonstrate his diplomatic sensitivity, he continues to open speeches with a jolly, "Bonjour, y'all!"



4: Jim Nicholson
Secretary, Department of Veterans Affairs

In contrast to the four most recent VA heads--who had previously held leadership positions with Disabled American Veterans, the Department of Defense, a state-level VA department, and VA itself--Jim Nicholson brings a refreshing lack of experience to veterans' advocacy. Although he is one of the country's 25 million military veterans, Nicholson--who, after Vietnam, went into real-estate law and development in Colorado--is best known as a campaign veteran. He chaired the Republican National Committee from 1997 to 2000, raising close to $380 million for the 2000 cycle. In Bush's first term, Nicholson was rewarded with the ambassadorship to the Holy See. But he traded vespers for vets last February, joining his brother John, who was already head of the National Cemetery Administration. In June, he admitted that VA had underestimated the number of veterans who would be seeking medical treatment this year by nearly 80,000 because it had failed to take into account the surge in enrollment by veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts--13,700 of whom have suffered blown-off limbs, bullet wounds, and the like. The miscalculation was a surprise to Congress, since Nicholson had written on April 5: "I can assure you that VA does not need [additional money] to continue to provide timely, quality service." Republican House Appropriations Committee Chair Jerry Lewis said VA's failure to identify the problem and notify Congress earlier "borders on stupidity."



3: Rear Admiral Cristina Beato
Acting Assistant Secretary for Health, Department of Health and Human Services

In June 2004, Cristina Beato admitted to her hometown newspaper that she hadn't paid much attention to the details of her resumé. That's too bad, because those silly little details seem to have stalled her confirmation for assistant secretary for health for over two years now. Beato said she earned a master's of public health in occupational medicine from the University of Wisconsin (but the university doesn't even offer that degree). She claimed to be "one of the principal leaders who revolutionized medical education in American universities by implementing the Problem Based learning curriculum" (but the curriculum was developed while Beato was still a medical student). She listed "medical attaché" to the American Embassy in Turkey as a job she held in 1986 (but that position didn't exist until 1995). She also boasted that she had "established" the University of New Mexico's occupational health clinic (but the clinic existed before she was hired, and there was even another medical director before her). For her part, Beato has offered a simple explanation: English is her third language, after French and her native Spanish, and sometimes the language barrier is just too much to handle. How does one say "pants on fire" in Spanish?



2: John Pennington
Director, Region Ten, Federal Emergency Management Agency

The Pacific Northwest is a catastrophe-prone area-- from tsunamis and volcanic eruptions in Washington and Oregon to wildfires in Idaho and oil pipeline ruptures in Alaska. That's why former Washington Representative Jennifer Dunn knew that fema needed "a natural" to head its disaster response efforts in the region. And that's exactly what Dunn said she found in 38-year-old John Pennington. Pennington would have to be a natural, given his utter lack of disaster-relief experience. A former state representative who ran a coffee business with his wife in rural Washington, Pennington served as Cowlitz County co-chairman of the Bush campaign in 2000. Dunn, who had been the Bush campaign's state chairperson, approached Pennington about the fema post, to which he was appointed in 2001. Alas, in the wake of former fema Director Michael Brown's resignation, Pennington's disaster of a resumé has come under increasing scrutiny. Last month, The Seattle Times reported that, just before he was appointed to his fema post, Pennington received his bachelor's degree from an unaccredited California correspondence school that federal investigators later described as a "diploma mill." Pennington's defenders have responded to questions about his qualifications by arguing that he has surrounded himself with competent staff.



1: Harriet Miers
White House Counsel, Nominee for Associate Justice of the Supreme Court

When we started researching this guide to the Bush hackocracy, nobody was sure who would wind up as number one. Competition was fierce. From under every bureaucratic rock, out scurried a Bush buddy. But we endeavored to be fair. There was spirited debate over the nuances between merely mediocre officials blindly loyal to the president and those with a demonstrated history of incompetence. (Alas, Andrew Card wound up on the cutting room floor.) Some argued that, by our own strict criteria, the president himself should be judged the number-one hack, but our deference to the wisdom of the electorate kept him off the list.

Truth be told, Harriet Miers could have easily slipped through quality control. But fate intervened. On Monday, Bush nominated Miers, the personal lawyer who fixed the paperwork on his fishing cabin, to the Supreme Court of the United States. Suddenly, it was no longer a competition. "I picked the best person I could find," Bush said Tuesday. And so have we.

We'd like to think that our process was slightly less arbitrary than the president's. Judging such matters is admittedly subjective, but if one were to express hackishness as a formula, it would look something like the adjacent equation.

Miers's croniness quotient is high. After all, the president has given her five jobs over the past eleven years. And senior White House aides have repeatedly remarked about her devotion to Bush. A Bush official's Danger to the Republic factor can generally be gleaned by the importance of his or her new job. And, while we grant that some unqualified candidates have turned out to be capable justices (see Jeffrey Rosen, "Judge Not,"), Miers's lifetime appointment to the highest position Bush is authorized to fill is like winning the hack lotto.

What, then, about Miers's qualifications? This is where she left the competition in the dust. Take, for example, her two-year stint on the Dallas City Council. Although she may not have been guided by any awe-inspiring understanding of constitutional law, she is credited with calming down a crowd of protesters after a county commissioner punched a police officer.

In announcing his choice, Bush pointed to her storied career as chairman of the Texas Lottery Commission. Although the Commission has historically not produced many Supreme Court justices, Bush has reason to be pleased with her lottery service. Miers may not have dealt with issues like civil rights or the death penalty, but she dealt with bingo. As chairman, she opined that she wanted all bingo-related games "to look and feel and smell like the game of bingo," which seems like a reasonable position.

Miers's solid job at the Lottery Commission and her other work for Bush catapulted her into the upper ranks of the White House. After three years as staff secretary, she beat out Brett M. Kavanaugh, a bright conservative lawyer with a John Roberts-like resumé, for the job of White House counsel. It was this job that positioned her to lead Bush's search for a court nominee.

This is quite a resumé, even before getting to some of Miers's legal writings. A search of the Nexis news database returns three articles by Miers. One is an opinion piece urging legislative calm in the wake of a string of deadly shootings. The second reveals Miers, who ran the corporate law firm of Locke Liddell & Sapp, to be an expert on a legal issue of great importance to the American people: managing the merger of two firms. The final article is a 1996 ABA Journal piece advertising the American Bar Association's new telephone seminars. "If you have heard any of the buzzwords of product promotions lately," she writes cheerfully, "we hope you will spot 'ABA Connection.'"

In hindsight, Harriet Miers was always the obvious choice for the Supreme Court. She is the logical conclusion of the unchecked Bush administration hackocracy. Bush's case for Miers actually rests on her being a crony. "Because of our closeness," he said Tuesday, "I know the character of the person."

In Federalist No. 76, Alexander Hamilton warned that, in presenting nominations to the Senate, a president "would be both ashamed and afraid" to nominate cronies--or, as Hamilton called them, "obsequious instruments of his pleasure." Maybe politics was different back in the 1780s, but we have watched Bush appoint many obsequious instruments of his pleasure. It may be his legacy: George W. Bush--he took the shame and fear out of cronyism.

Holy Order Cheese

I don't think direct linking the vid works unless you have a registration, but go to my namesake, without the blogspot. That's www.romancancel.com, for the people who didn't catch that. Anyway it's boss Holy Order Sol, with infinite meter, I bet he regens life also. We've been fighting stupidly overpowered bosses forever, but that one counter super !!FRCed!! into the auto combo super that takes off 65% or so is SILLY. Then again infinite meter is silly, you hear that RCing BOSS INO WHO LIKE TO STALL DURING MISSIONS SO TIME RUNS OUT?

Anyway, I've been worrying about Slash for a while. The balancing by nerfing in particular (No Millia combos after her throw? Bah. And they really nerfed Jam. Also, yes Sol lost his dust loop. But christ he NEEDS his dust loop to get anywhere, otherwise well...Sol doesn't have much!) Most of the changes I have lying around somewhere in a big text file. Explanation

The Halo Dies post needs a little more explanation.
For the 2 people or so who clicked one of the links, they were treated to 20 minutes of action hero-ness.

In short, an innocent coder was coding a mod for Halo for the computer that would be like Ocarina of Time multiplayer.
If anyone remembers Ocarina of time, it introduced the wonders of easyness called "Z-Targetting."
Anyway, good friend asks coder for said source code, coder says sure why not.
Good friend gives it to bad man, bad man says, oh-ho, programs in lead compensators, releases working CLIENT SIDE AIMBOT that works regardless of SERVER SIDE.

Ok, so I watched Peter's nearly four hour long CMU VR game webcast thing.
Freaking amazing.
As I understand it, these are two week game projects that had to use drumsets, a headset, or something I didn't quite catch its name, but all virtual reality devices.
About half an hour of talking, which was really informative (Disneyland rides, indirect control, etc.), and then the student projects.

The two projects that were truly awesome were 4 way versus multiplayer Nibbler/Snake, which I could totally see being marketed in bars or arcades or something, and Pitt's Burgers, a rather amusing burger flipping simulation.

Sorry Peter, but your wack-a-mole came after Nibbler XD.

But yeah, worth my time =O.
Two weeks is insane though, you must not have any other classes but that one.

Don't cry!

And hot on the heels of the last post is the list of "Holy plothole, even for an movie rpg!"
More like ESPECIALLY for a movie rpg.

1. Cloud bleeds once in the beginning when Yazoo shoots off his goggles.
NO ONE EVER BLEEDS AGAIN AFTER THAT.
2. Kadaj summoning Bahamut from a GREEN materia.
3. Red XIII has a freaking JETPACK.
4. Bahamut's blast COMPLETELY disappears into magic space after Cloud cuts him.
Shoot the thrower, the grenade is still there. The town should be obliterated.
5. Rufus is in incredibly fine form after having Diamond Weapon shoot a cannon straight into his office. Also, he can't shoot worth a damn. Oh yeah, Kadaj falls faster because he weighs heavier, DUH!
6. Cloud's double sword detach weapon magically gets 4 or 5 more swords in it against Sephiroth.
7. Yazoo has time to FIND A NEW GUN after his old one gets chopped in half and he is blown up by explosives.

Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children is WORTH YOUR TIME.
Or at least Peter Justeson says so, and Peter Justeson hates everyone in FF7.

Honestly though, they really piled on the fan service (not that kind), so I can't help but smile.
I mean I enjoyed the game (not to the extent that 95% of gamefaqs did), but they took what coolness I remembered and expanded on it 50 fold.

Since no one reads this, I'm going to assume you've SEEN the damn movie, except maybe Allan, but who knows if he's even played the game =O.

Cool point 1: CLOUD KEEPS ALL HIS SWORDS in a handy place.
Cool point 2: The oh so "contrived" (Peter's term) battle, you know the one against the big guy. Couldn't help but smile, even if it the setup was so obviously coming.
Cool point 3: Victory fanfare after Tifa wins.
Cool point 4: Rufus shooting while falling with that damnable smile on his face the entire time.
Cool point 5: Motorcycle battle 2. That guy cheats with haste.

Ok there are a lot more, just watch it for yourself if you haven't =O.

Tenbatsu!

Interesing week for music...
First off, we have an "article" on dempa music; here's a link to the Top 10 list.
Anyway, for those Japanese impaired, Miko Miko Nurse sits (I think wrongly), at number one.
Followed by Sakuranbo Kiss at number two, which most any Kotoko fan will have.
Number three however, is a song I had DEFINITELY heard before but could not place.
Turns out it was on a GGXX Jam combo movie.
Tenbatsu! Angel Rabi.
For some reason very very easy to loop, a silly high-pitched ditty about Angel Rabi punishing bad people with a magical baton.

Secondly, Saros wants to make a DSJ combo video, using Kotoko's Re-Sub.
I prefer Agony honestly, then again it could be because I heard it first, thanks again to a combo video (EFZ Mai).
99% of my buddy list and Saros prefer Re-Sub, while almost the entire mIRC channel of #nipponsei prefers Agony.
Oh yeah, some people prefer suppuration above both, but that's different.
Managed to do a really screwy Yuka combo that impressed both me and him, but coming up blank on ideas for other characters.
Lily's damage is pretty bad -_-a

Third, random JHU/AIM buddy Airellian IMs me with Spin, a short clip? trailer? promo thing.
It rocks.

Finally, Dare, by the Gorillaz.
Noodle is win, and incidientally if anyone wants the video or wants to know where to get a stream grabber, just aim me.

Some niggling questions...

1. When a soul "dies" in soul society, they are reborn in the "real" world, correct?
2. What about people in the "real" world who already have both forms (Like Ichigo), what would happen if his shinigami form died, or his human form?
3. Do family ties apply after a soul dies in the real world?
How about if a soul dies in soul society?
4. Rukia is 140-150 years old, therefore it can be assumed that dying in soul society from old age is pretty hard.
Yet, the material world's population is getting steadily larger.
Where are all these extra souls coming from, if there is a balance?
Furthermore, you have a LOT of souls each year becoming hollows or being eaten by hollows.
It doesn't quite work out.

Buying Gold in MMOs
Buying gold in MMOs such as World of Warcraft has been a hot topic for years. It's all over the forums on www.worldofwarcraft.com right now. One side thinks "I've worked so hard to earn my gold, why should someone with real-life money get to buy it?" The other side thinks, "I have a job and can't play 15 hours per day. Why should kiddies with more free time get to mindlessly grind gold? They have more time, but it's worth it to me to spend $1 to get over 10 gold, so I do." Neither side can seem to understand the other.

I'm not sure why one side sees grinding gold as some amazing accomplishment that they earned. Farming gold is just as retarded as buying it on ebay, really. A lot of these complaints are coming from the angle that buying gold makes the playfield uneven in the competitive game of World of Warcraft. Newsflash: World of Warcraft is not a real competitive game. I think I've covered that one. There is no beginning, middle and end to a game (except in CTF matches), and people don't come to the table with the same resources the way they do in chess or Street Fighter or tennis.

This is the part where some of you write me mail about how people don't come to the table with the same resources in those games either because some people bring skill and others don't. Or maybe you'll say some people have more time to practice tennis so they get to bring more skill. Surely you know how bankrupt those comments are. The whole point of competitive games is that skill is the one uneven thing you are allowed to bring into and otherwise even match. Some people need lots of time to develop skill, and others don't. But no one buys skill (directly).

Also don't write me about how tennis gear or Magic cards cost money, so people bring different things to the table based on money in those games. No they don't. If you are a real Magic tournament player, you can get any card you want by trading or buying. A certain amount of cash or connections is needed to even play for real. Similarly, tournament tennis matches don't happen between people with $9 gear and people with $9,000 gear. Tournament tennis players have access to reasonably similar amount of gear and get ot compete based on a combination of skill, strategy and stamina.

MMOs are inherently uneven playfields. Unemployed kiddies grinding for gold vs. wealthy professionals buying it only highlights this issue; it doesn't create it. I guess I'm saying you can't really complain about people bringing different amounts of resources into a game that's entirely based on uneven playfields in the first place.

You know who the real loser is? Blizzard. Why aren't they finding a way to make money off this? Sony is. They have new servers for EverQuest that are flat out labeled as 'gold buying' servers. You know going in that you can trade real money for in-game money, and so can everyone else. If you don't like it, go on another server (where it happens anyway, btw), but at least Sony gets to make some money off it.

If you're still upset over this issue, maybe take up a real competitive game such as chess, Street Fighter, counter-strike, Magic: The Gathering, or...I don't know...Scrabble. No one will ever trade US dollars for extra letter tiles against you.

What a downer, I bet I could have made a difference, like say...9-0 or 10-1.

In other news, we played a random magic draft that day cause of the power blackout.
Got swept by Brady, won two nailbiters off peter.
Hell everyone seems to win nailbiters off Peter.
Played Kenny once and won, but he said I took too long so we didn't play a second game.
Guy would have like 50000000 life and you'd have to whittle it down, or in my case, millstone him down.

Had a really good interview on Friday, I guess that's how the good ones are supposed to go anyway (Got a free magazine too, yay.)

Owned my Oracle certification (well, 1Z0-007 anyway) completely.

ATAMA DESU NO!

Um yeah, those who know me might know where I've been holed up.
Christ on a crutch Duel Savior Justice owns my soul.
Guard mode is ridiculously addictive, and stupid at the same time.
Things like Kaede's anti air uppercut which NEVER GIVE ME ENOUGH HITS even though I PARRY THEM ALL piss me off.

Also, our match vs NoOne left a bad taste in my mouth.
First map, we pulled of 1-0 cap on Ice Fields in overtime.
They completely raped us in kills.

Second map DI, we won 3-2 in overtime but they disputed cause Naota drove a hog into their base my mistake, and they said it helped us cap, which it didn't.

Third map Timbo, which we played because if they win dispute then we wouldn't have to reschedule, they accused methos of print screening when it was THEIR own laggy ass server being stupid.
We all had certifications on too, you CANT print screen with that on, even with fraps or what not.

Anyway, Noone are sore winners/losers =O

Hope this doesn't become permanent bad blood or whatever between WPC and NoOne...

WTF LAG

So we played our Halo PC assault league match yesterday.
First things first, halobuster ABSOLUTELY dropped the ball.
Completely.
It failed for about everyone in the assault league, forcing gamecam and fraps to be used.
And of course, if your computer was too shitty to use either (I HATE playing at 30fps or just variable fps in general), then you had to basically agree to a no HB no vid capture game, which always brings up the problem of wires and BLUE WALLZ OMGZ.
Yeah sucks.
At least fox didn't play the first week, so rasta couldn't have brought out his xray goggles.

The way assault league works is:
You have 2 minutes on offense or defense, where you try to bring the flag to the opponent's base or stop that from doing so.
When your time is up you switch to the other mode, regardless of where the flag is.
No silly lag jumping with hogs (think the bloodgulch hog gunner throws).
First round, then teams switch colors (this helps on maps like blood gulch, where red has such a territory advantage)
If it's tied in overall captures, it goes into overtime.

ANYWAY, we were vs WTF LAG, who has dole.
Not only Dole, but Dole, stimpy, u No, synide, and st!mpy.
Let's put it nicely when I say each one of these guys could 1v1 each one of our guys and win.
We were running Methos, Naota, Mike, Ziri, and yours truly.
We were going to switch Rathe in but didn't happen =O.
First round we were on red.
Anyway, we hit the rod room first (OMG!) and blasted their two guys in there...but after a while when I got up on their side of the ledge I was killed by psychic nades.
I don't think we ever got control of the middle ever again after that, uNo was just pounding us from the sniper cliff, and stimpy was always in the middle on the temple with a rod, and someone ELSE was always either on OUR rockets or THEIR rockets with a rod.
Oh yeah, stupid Dole wasn't sniping (he's so awesome at it), he was lag capping =O.
We got pincered in the second to last chance they had for scoring, I'm just grateful we held them to 1-0 instead of something worse.

Round two, we go on blue.
MAD capping here.
Christ this game was exciting as hell.
I was capper more often than most, and I was like at 0 12 at one point, which improved to 2-16 or something horrible like that.
I think they actually were up 2 flags before we made this furious rally.
I remember getting really close before getting popped, than Ziri came with this OUT OF NO WHERE save from the tunnels and scored.
Anyway, we took the sniper ledge more often than not, took the middle more often than not, and beat them to the temple rod more often than not.
Round ends 3-2...US!

Overtime. Home team (US) chooses blue.
The way overtime works each team gets 2 minutes for offense, then a lo3 (load 3) which basically resets the map while the other team gets 2 minutes for offense.
If the team that starts on offense caps, the other team still gets a chance.
First team ahead after each pair of 2 minute rounds wins.
Crazy.
We basically kept shutting each other down clean.
I think this is when my mother walked in and was like you're still playing games!
And I was like I'm sorry, it's overtime in a tournament match =O
Anyway, kept gunning dole out of his ghost with rocket and machine gun hogs, and our runner(s) (we didn't really do extremely set positions, so I think as many as 3 different people were flag runners) were basically stuffed before we even went halfway by temple frg or ledge frg or sniper.
This goes back and forth for a while.
I think we got really close once, we had two ghosts well past half way, only dole? was manning a rocket hog, and we had someone on their side tunnels, but the ghosts (I was behind ziri I think) were impatient (oops) and we went early without waiting for our tunnel guy to blast dole away or at least distract.
We could have won it right there.
Anyway, WTF finally pulls a pincer on us and scores.
GGs around.

But WAIT!
Assault league rules state that if each side goes through 3 overtime periods with no score, the game is a draw!
We started rewatching our videos and counting our rounds, and turns out we had all forgotten about the rule and WTF had scored on their 4th run.
So we tied!
They still owned us in kills though, but that match was really fun.

Oh right, had another interview this MORNING, this time with manpower professionals, a contracting company that does work for...IBM.
In short, I have to go through that interview, than basically go through an interview with IBM also.

American Ma

Today, when I went over the White Plains for company look around, I was driven by my dad to American Ma's house, and then she drove me to the company.
My dad works pretty far (Tarrytown), and he couldn't take the drives anymore, so he actually stays the night at her place two of three days during the work week.

Oh yeah, BZZZT.
Hate marketing.
My comp sci degree hasn't exactly made me suited for calling people and selling them website designs...

When my dad came over from Taiwan, he stayed over with a host family for...I don't know, a long time before marrying and settling in Brewster.
The host family was this ridiculously all-American model, we're talking ancestors immigrated in the 1630's from Ireland and France on both sides, many relatives, the works.
When we were young or so, our family always went to their sprawling house on holidays.
And BOY were they awesome times...traditional multiple course turkey dinners with lots of people during Thanksgiving and Christmas, or on Easter we'd go hunt for eggs, etc.
We called the matriarch and the patriarch American grandpa and American grandma respectively, along with Uncle Joe (their son), and Aunt Julie (their daughter), and uncle Lubashek? (haha i still can't pronounce his name properly, son in law)
There was also this little girl who was their real granddaughter, who was about a year older than Keshine (still a baby in my eyes.)
Anyway, I don't remember when exactly, but we basically stopped going after a certain year, and I always wondered why.

Turns out my mother hates them.
There was always this weird tension when we went there, now that I think back on it.
I finally asked the reason not too long ago, and my mother never forgave American Ma because one time she babysat me and evidentally when my mom returned I was soaking wet and developed an extremely high fever the next day.

Still, compared to my REAL grandparents, who were in Taiwan, especially on my dad's side, (I saw his mother ONCE before she died and his father was like a chainsmoking grump?), they were closer and a bigger part of my life when I was young.

Anyway, though, that's in the past...
American pa died seven years ago (We had stopped going to their house for a while by then), and American ma has struggled for 10 years with breast cancer.
Natasha (Julie and Lubashek's daughter) is all grown up, I doubt she remembers Kenny and Keshine and I, and according to grandma it turns out she wants to be a rock band lead singer/guitarist.

It really tears my heart out though to see her so lonely.
Everytime she sees me, Kenny, or Keshine she lights up and reminisces about the old times in that sprawling house (Her story about me liking fried calimari is her favorite).
It's a good thing my dad stays there during the weekdays now.

I should try to make an effort to visit her and the rest of them...waxing nostalgic...

Christ I'm jumpy right now.
3:39AM and I'm practically bouncing off the walls in my darkened room.
There's a lightning bug that's going insane along with me, together we're twirling around, except instead of my ass it's my brain that's blinking on and off with ideas.

Sometimes I wonder about my overactive imagination, and whether I could ever find an outlet for it.

There's no way I can return to a normal sleep schedule unless I stay up the entire way I think.

Fade Out

Ironic how the stormy discussion over games with my mom on Saturday night faded on Sunday.
That and I kept a low profile after installing two air conditions for me and Keshine's rooms and closing my door all day and reading until night.

Anyway, first Halo PC twl match with WPC, and of course my mom's internet applications owned our internet connection way past 9:30.
So I had to sit out for Sidewinder, which from the voice comms was a heartbreaking narrow loss.
I never knew how good these guys were before (I think Naota said "teh sux"), but they put up a hell of fight, and hell they won Sidewinder, which is evidentally our best map. (Which I wasn't there for but oh well.)
9:50 rolls around, mom's gone to shower/sleep, so I sub in for Shinta for Death Island and Timberland.
DI was...a slaughter.
5-0.
Almost nothing to say about that one, except Mike outsheed people, I outsheed people, Methos (base camper), used like a rocket per 2 scores (VERY FEW), and we just completely mauled them.
It was sort of silly, that cough secret shee video I had helped a lot as I was able to pull off some dogfight wins.

Timberland was nailbiting.
Evidentally Timberland is one of our worst, and it shows.
I'm still not exactly sure what role I play on timbo, I've been designated capper, to left rusher, to right rusher, etc. etc.
Anyway, we score first, then they pull out a score while I was IN THEIR BASE with a rod.
I suicided myself instead of just hiding, stupid stupid stupid.
OVERTIME started off scary as they started jumping on us again, but we held and finally Ziri lucked out a flag when we put insanely strong base rape down.

By the way Ziri went AFK like four times in Timberland alone =O.
Family business (I know how it feels), but of course they were base raping us whenever he'd blink out =O.

FRAPS is of variable quality.
People like pwnage/Dole can record steady at 60 without dying, and I can do that SOMETIMES, but hell sometimes I get crippling halo freezing screen problems.
Only way I think to ensure it would be to go down to 30 frames, which just bites ass.

Megaman X1 and X2 speedrun.
This isn't two speedruns, this is someone who wired a controller to play two emulators/games at once, so he uses the EXACT same input to beat both games within a frame or so of each other.
It's madness, it's headache inducing, it's genius.

Finally, sudoku. Number puzzles. Give them a whirl.
I expect everyone to go straight for the evil level ones and spend anywhere from half an hour (my fastest) to 4 hours plus on these.

So I got some a job offer, but it was sort of weird, from an internet company (TSVGROUP) in White Plains with like FOUR results when I google them.

I'm sort of worried.

I'm beginning to think the Garou videos posted at Combovideos is just some doofus who scoured Howardarena for the best matches he could find and then "uploads" them to CV with some bullshit about his two anonymous friends.

You'd think that Gato with his cheesy ass corner launcher kicks and his super that combos off EVERYTHING would be first, but evidentally he's below her by two points because HE HAS A 4/6 MATCHUP against her o_O.

What I'm seeing from Jenet is...her air special kicks are safe if blocked, go at a REALLY shallow angle (Think triangle jumping), almost NEVER get just defended cause the initial hit is so fast, usually trade with people's fastest air moves (jumping jabs and shorts!), and if they land on a standing opponent in the corner, can be repeated into each other ending with a super.

She also has a rush move that can be cancelled and seems mainly for continuing a block chain midscreen to push you into the corner.

Jenet also has an air throw and a float/fly.
In a game where you can't block in the air (but you can just defend), Jenet seems to be one of the few people who can just jump in fearlessly, cause of her special kicks, her throw, and her ability to change her jump trajectory midair.

Her standing normals are also pretty quick, while she doesn't have corner cheese like Terry's charge punching guard crush, she can make do with her 99mph standing jabs and kicks.

Her game is pretty much short hop special kicks, fast normal, rush move cancelled, fast normal, short hop special kicks or rush move cancelled again until you reach corner, right before corner she will usually do the special kicks to get point blank than spam jabs, guard break, win.

Did I mention I've seen all three of her supers used?
Her Chun Li kicks are mainly when standing normals connect on standing people, her dress twirl is usually to finish off a special kicks on counter or against an air opponent (which OFTEN happens, cause NO ONE wants to get hit by the special kicks on the ground), and her weirdo rush super seems to be done usually on just defend cancel.

I'm still sort of calling BS on her being better than Gato though.
A 6/4 match up at that.
That guy is fucking nuts.

Terry's much lower than I thought he'd be, I mean christ he has that stupid punch rush in the corner thing.
Rock's as low as I thought he'd be, he's so one trick, just that it does 80% or so. (Special throw -> ORYAAAAAAA -> Rising Tackle)
I thought Kevin Ryan would be higher.
Jae Hoon's higher than I thought he'd be too, probably cause I have very few Jae Hoon vids of him winning (Then again he fights Jenet)
But his BnB is EASY, does slightly less than a third of your life, and it's comboable from a Jump in or low, so that's pretty nice.

Grand Theft Porno

Well, PS2 rom's are pretty hard to hack.
Problem is, computer games are not.
THIS thing has been all over the news today, as it seems Rockstar left in porno scenes that one can't normally access.
However, if you download a patch from some Dutch hacker, it unlocks them.

Now, the outroar exists because, if you're M, i.e. 17 years or older, and you have this game for the PC; you can download a program that unlocks coitus electronicus, if you will.

Haven't we heard of this before?
Tomb Raider and Dead or Alive Beach Volleyball nude patches?
I think the sticking point here is that the code is already in the game, just not enabled.
Does that consist as part of the game to be rated?

I think since the means are the same, the ends are the same.
Since you have to alter the game, no matter how small, to view the content, Rockstar really isn't responsible.

If I hid Fuck Yous in an E-rated game's source, am I going to get owned?

Japanese SAQ

Have you ever noticed that Japanese TV shows start at odd times?
One show starts at 6:58, another at 7:00, and another at 7:05.
Why is that?

A. Until several years ago, most Japanese TV shows did start exactly on the hour, but because of the TV ratings war, some stations decided to get the jump on their competitors and start their programs a little earlier.
The networks realised that because most programs ended a little before the hour, people would often start channel surfing, but they would be more likely to start watching a station that wasn't airing commercials at that time.
Similarly, if a program runs until a little past the hour, viewers are more likely to watch the next program because they have missed the beginning of programs that have already started on other stations.
Now that every station (except NHK) does it, there is nothing to be gained from starting programs earlier or later, and the stations have become trapped in a vicious circle where starting times are getting earlier and earlier.

Anyway, July 4th weekend, ended up going to TAC (Taiwanese American Conference, East Coast) for the first time since four years ago and the second time period.
Four years ago, I remember it being in pretty shitty dorms, but pretty organized, then again I was just out of high school.

This year was in Cornell.
Cornell is fucking beautiful, the dorms are amazing, the campus rapes JHU blindfolded.
However program wise...
Long story short, the director of the ABC (After and Beyond College) program dropped out last second, so the two poor counselor helpers had to run everything.

They tried, and I did meet a whole bunch of interesting people, but like I felt we lacked options.
The focus for the ABC program was networking/career, but some of those crazy people already had jobs for like three years (one guy had his own house), so some of them just went to the adult programs.
Which of course, are completely in Taiwanese (fluency: 0).
Anyway, so us ABC's mixed with the adults and the college program (who had a more interesting focus: activism), and it wasn't too bad.
Oh right, the food was good, Cornell's like that.
But the above choice quote was from the second parent/youth discussion on family matters.
That pretty much made the entire youth side of the room rumble like a storm.
Seriously, the parents are all like, we listen blah blah, then they go home and just don't.
It was sort of funny talking to all these 21+ year old graduates who still have problems with their parents.

Oh yeah, learned some things:
90% of asians are or will be lactose intolerant.
Taiwan is only 14% bums from China. (Nationalists)
I am holo Taiwanese.
I will get carded if I try to go into a bar.
30 minutes of running will completely exhaust me.
Popa/boba/bubble tea, popa is cantonese for big waves, aka big boobs.
Hence, how the tea got its name.

If there's one thing though, the conference did sort of reinforce some of my annoyance toward people who don't recognize Taiwan or just don't care. (NOOB THIS MEANS YOU)
I felt like there is a vindication for having an independant country (who the fuck are these 14% nationalists that ran the country militarily and now want to reunite with China), and I feel annoyed that these "foreigners" as you will, somehow view us as the same or a part of them.

Oh right I learned how to say that fish my dad likes in Taiwanese.
Score one for my language learning.

He's going to Siera college, a new site closer than Skidmore.
Boys got screwed out of air conditioning yet AGAIN.

I feel sorry that the sexual discrimination continues to this day (8 or so years after I went there).
New campus, very jesus freaky.

Kore kara hontou no syoubu nan da yo!

New Senkou no Ronde matches up at Sega.
They're streaming again so I recommend using SDP or whatever to capture them.

Anyway, Karel seems...pretty overpowering!
He doesn't gain meter that fast at least.
His primary shot isn't spread or anything, but it's a VERY fast VERY powerful direct hit, and if you're caught in his other spam (for one bar) he can combo it off.
It does way too much I think.
His super isn't anything to scoff at either, with the two waves of shots from his arms.
Some people I think can give him a run for his money, like Mika (who if he has meter can just AOE bomb the shots away), but people like...Changpo I don't really think have a way to stand up to it.
Fabian's super also strikes me as overpowering, and that guy builds meter like CRAZY.
Hopefully we see more character matches, and at least one using the secret girl.

Forgot to mention THIS. What the hell, have character designers lost their minds. By now I bet you're wondering what's so weird about that picture. Well, who cares if the kids a robot, that is a GUY. A GUY. IT'S BRIDGET VERSION TWO. And he got on the cover of ARCADIA as fucking well. (OMG I'd RATHER HAVE THE GODAMN SKIRT THEN THE BLUE THING AGHHH.) Anyway, I'm already dreading the wave of fanart that's sure to come.

Ok, this guy's attacks...maybe I'm reading too much into it, but his shots revolve around large circles (not the massive bullet spam you see in shooters, we're talking uh...LARGE circles), and his SUPER is a sword. A SWORD. That shoots LOTS of large circles.

Evangeline rules

I'm actually staying the fuck away from the Mahou Sensei Negima anime because it has all sorts of things wrong (GUILTY) about it; I stopped dling the manga! Really! I did! Even if I enjoyed it more than I should have!, but this cracks me up.

I think 2chan can pull it off, they are fucking scary powerful when they get zerg rush.

In other news...I think I have to resume dling Mahou Sensei Negima manga XD.

Inori

Hm...a couple weeks ago I managed to get a bunch of AIR soundtracks from Tanzy because I was so in love with the OP and ED.
So I send the ED to Darren and he was like, "I think your love of the anime affects your love of the music."
To which I had to respond with, "Fuck you."
Then he sent me Inori, which was fucking unfair.
I mean he sent a song from one of my favorite singer/voice actors, and the song was crazy good.
It was like the perfect song to show me up.

Anyway, I didn't really think much more about it until Tanzy started asking for Maaya Sakamoto albums.
So I basically sacrificed all my space to get ALL HER(Maaya) SINGLE ALBUMS in the space of a couple hours, then I sacrified MORE space because a certain person on 56k wanted the Ys VI soundtrack AND the Romancing Saga -Minstrel- soundtrack.

Long story short, one of those soundtracks (Romancing Saga), stopped midway (It was 4 fucking CDS) because I had run completely out of space on OMFG (Drive D:\)
So I basically deleted about 10 or so game imgs because I still have the original zips for torrenting purposes, and also made a vow...finish one Japanese game at a time so I wouldn't have to keep unzipping imgs onto my hard drive that wouldn't get used.

So that's right, I'm resuming my slow translation of Utawaweru Mono, no matter what.
I had done quite a bit of work on it surprisingly, massive kanji lists and translations and what not.
After I finish that I'll probably move on to Aselia.
Funny how both are getting ps2 releases in Japan.

Anyway, I need a good paper Japanese-English dictionary.
Also want an mp3 player, ipods don't seem to cut it from what I'm seeing about their specs.
ALSO want a ps2, but haha, I don't want to kill my work ethic more than it has suffered.

Hitsugaya is absolutely perfectly FINE.
We're talking he had his bankai sliced in half, and himself almost, and he's acting almost normal.
I'd be fucking brooding like crazy, he's just a kid after all, and one of the people he looked up to turns out to be in league with one he hates the most.
Plus they killed (ok NEAR killed) his girl.

Hinamori is alive WTFBBQNESS.
She had plenty of time to lose all her vital signs...PLENTY OF TIME.
How is she alive?!
It's not that I don't want to see her alive, I just don't think she could have SURVIVED.

Battlefield 2

I think I'm going to have to play the single player first before I figure out how this game works.
It's not intuitive, or even semi intuitive like BF1942.
First off...shooting seems...really screwy.
I have a reticle, but damned if I know I'm hitting them or not.
Second, VEHICLES are scary as shit.
They are hard to control, harder to aim and shoot, and HARDEST to fucking kill.
Grenade launcher point blank range at a tank?
No damage.
Hell, the jet planes (f-15s? SOMETHING) and the helicopters make it scarier.
How are you suppoesd to kill those without finding AA guns/bazookas/or going anti tank.
I suck at grenades...
But c still changes points of view, just there are like 4 points of view per vehicle, and hell if I can drive while in first person mode in a tank, I have to switch out to 3rd person mode, but then aiming is RIDICULOUSLY hard, so I have to hit c 3 more times to get back into first person to shoot...
Craziness...
Too weird right now, I need to learn some basic ability first.

Bread Battle

Hm, well holy shit Yakitate manga is wayyyyy ahead of the anime.
But godamn the intrigue really is something.

Tsukino's family is fucking wacky.
Her little sister isn't so bad (I think she's cute), but the fucking older one is straight from hell.

Poor Mokoyama, if he ends up at the southern branch, their store will be unstoppable.

OMG, nice fatherly bread baking man has become evil St. Pierre cigar smoking with Yukino owning mogul.
Azuma must reclaim his soul!
At least that's what I think is going to happen.

New addition of Kanmuri, the scientist.
Hm, his character is interesting, Yukino probably knew more about his feelings then she let on, which is why she completely eradicated his research. (He's vindictive so I had to crush him completely.)
But he's FOCUSED, and he wants to kill Yukino (join the club!) so he's A-OK in my book.
It'll be interesting to see how it plays out.

Back at home, and I pick up a Time magazine about twixters, young adults who live off their parents, bounce from job to job, etc, etc.

Finally finished all voice for Valkyrie Profile Japanese.
I think Freya's last hit sound (Ko kai sasete ageru wa!) did the trick.
Moved computer upstairs and installed wireless card, can't bother with games (the ping is crazy) unless I move modem and wires upstairs.

USS...Anime?

Well, one of the political bloggers (USS Clueless) I read a lot (not as frequently as say, Instapundit, must I say his views are slightly conservative? As opposed to common sense? Then again, trying to tell people that Iraq without Saddam was better than Iraq with is an exercise in the lack of common sense), has hung up his political blogging shoes to blog about ANIME.
I know, it just strikes me too as wacky, and sort of cool at the same time.
Anyway, creepy entry from May 22nd.

His reviews seem pretty on the ball (Noir four stars? That's a bit TOO nice), and I'm seeing a COUGH tendency toward series people would consider "shoujo."
Which rocks.
I wouldn't have pegged Denbeste as a shoujo person.
However, I'm disappointed he didn't give Azumanga Daioh a chance.
First DVD blah, get in on the fansub community Denbeste!

The Gamer's Manifesto

John Cheese strikes again!
Anyway my personal take:
1. In shooters, not really that important, bot intelligence honestly doesn't matter much if they can't aim. And then what, only a certain percentage of their shots hit as a difficulty meter?
2. See Japan.
3. Ha! FF8 was trash. But yes, if that tech demo of ff7 is bullshit, then SAY it will be bullshit.
4. See Japan again.
5. See...guess what, Japan, once again.
6. Well, I am a QUICKSAVE WHORE. As in give me an emulator, and you'll find I use 5 or so save states constantly. This promotes sort of laziness, but I do agree some games won't die from a quicksave function.
7. Do you know that on an emulated PSX for computer, you will still get "loading" times? It's like built in.
8. Madden sucks!
9. I LIKE THIS. However, the thing you have to remember is, for a console, everytime you put in jump, you use up a button. PC, no excuse.
10. We've just started on being able to do this (HL2). Immersion only depends on the game honestly. How the hell would you immerse yourself in a tactics game?
11. Hm...again, depends on the game genre for point a. For point b, well, if you have multiple angles, who cares if you can just choose the one you want. Sometimes you want to see the sunset around you (See WoW or Everquest or whatever). Point c is YES. Keep it Japanese, stupid.
12. Yes about RPG triggers. No about ammo starvation (Ammo does not pop out of zombie dogs, immersion wise, and neither is it infinite.) Yes about confusing floor plans with no maps. Yes about instafail stealth levels. Not sure about ending levels, as most of the one's I've seen are RPGS, and as such, aren't challenging at all. Ambivalent about speed cheating, there's not much you can do with racing car AI (see 1) besides corner perfectly and taking the most effecient route. Speed cheating just gives them a chance, or would you rather they drive like God.
13. Unlocking stuff is CRUCIAL to keeping a gamer occupied. So no.
14. Haha on the crates. They seem to show up in FPS the most. I really have no beef with crates.
15. YES ON PATENTS. YES ON EA. YES ON CRAP.
16. Anarchy online, anyone?
17. Reminds me of the sega fantasy VI flash. People WANT their consoles to do their taxes...really a pity with nintendo there.
18. This WILL HAPPEN. Sony's giving in was ALREADY THE FIRST SIGN. Game economies, especially mmorpg economies, will become linked to normal economies.
19. AHAHAHA. Can't see your feet. I like that. Yes jumping puzzles are hilariously bad.

Teaching in Japan

If you haven't headed over to I am a Japanese school teacher I suggest you do so now.
There's some scary shit that goes down there...but it's hilarious.

I remember when my roommate first saw the Naruto Kancho (1000 years of pain!)...his face turned into this mask of holywtf that's horrible.
Well it happens, and it hurts.
I think if I were to each English over there, I'd teach high school, cause holy shit 12-15 year olds ass-stabbing just isn't cool.
I don't think they'd dickgrab though...I can BLEND IN with my yellowface.
Plus well...uh...stereotypes...bah godamn just go read the stories on that webpage already.

The night before my plane left, I went to a baseball game. The regular season hadn't started yet, it was just exhibition (A's vs Giants), but it was still a bajillion zillion times better than Japanese baseball. In Japanese baseball, the strategy is to get a man on base...then bunt. They bunt with no outs, one out, two outs, runners on first, second, third, the bases loaded, it doesn't matter. The pitcher bunts, the power hitter bunts, the leadoff hitter bunts, they might as well call it Buntball and just be done with it. The funny thing is, the Japanese almost sort of think that they invented baseball. A friend of mine asked why do the Japanese always bunt, and I told him "Are you kidding?! Sacrificing yourself for the good of the team, really was there any other choice?"

Admiration is...a feeling furthest away from understanding.

WELL, been a fucking WHILE since I did this...but yeah with the shifting of powers it is worth mentioning.

Here it'll be really simple:

Bad guys:
Aizen, formerly "dead" captain of the 5th.
Gin, former captain of the 3rd.
Tousen, former captain of the 9th.

Good guys:
Everyone but those listed in neutral. Which is one guy.

Neutral/just bitter:
Mayuri, captain of the 12: The guy Quincy fucked up is back and doesn't really care about the axis of evil. Heh I bet he's just jealous that there were two researchers (Aizen and Uruhara) more fucked up then he was.

Dead?:
Momo, sub of the 5th
Hitsugaya, captain of the 10th
Byakuya, captain of the 6th
Renji, sub of the 6th

In short, holy shitness.
Aizen's alive, and even without hypnosis he has the power to fucking CATCH PEOPLES BANKAIS SUCH AS ICHIGOS AND RENJIS WITH HIS BARE HANDS.
WTFBBQ.
Hope for Momo to live seems to be fading faster and faster, and Hitsugaya's in really bad shape (but rather recent so I think he has a better chance than her.../cry for Momo)
Byakuya and Renji are tough, they probably won't die.
Gin...I honestly don't know what's up with him and Matsumoto...there was something, and he almost looks genuine sorry before he leaves.
Tousen is wtf.
Need an explanation soon on that guy, amazing how that one got pulled over us.

Rukia at least has been retrieved!
But at what cost -_-
I really hope Ichigo and her do spend a long while together...

And then there's the problem of Uruhara...he's not evil, but he still used them to try to fix his own mistake...and now it's too late.

Crisis

I wonder why the last semester had to go spectacurly bad.
It's like every one of my worst fears materialized and hit me in the face.
Now I'm in risk of failing not one, not two, but THREE courses.
The third one is completely my fault too, and in a lot more serious ways.
I'm surprised the professor didn't just completely write me off and leave me to die, cause that's what I deserve.

Suicide gets you no where but man I've been contemplating isolation in a box with a computer for these past two weeks.

In the wake of September II, a Pakistan-based publisher scanned the Web for bin Laden images that could be printed on anti-American signs, posters, and T-shirts.
CNN reporters recorded the unlikely image of a mob of angry Pakistanis marching through the streets waving signs depicting Bert and Bin Laden.
American public television executives spotted the CNN footage and threatened to take legal action: “The people responsible for this should be ashamed of themselves.”
Coming full circle, other Sesame Street spoofs began to surface on the Web, linking various characters with the terrorists.

Goal

Air ended.
Fuck me.
Massive spoiler crap.
I really can't say anything I guess.
But yeah Jeff Lawson was right, 10 was really weird and off (Stupid Yukito crow), 11 was right on and really touching, and 12 was sort of soul crushing.

I actually liked episode 8 and 9 a whole lot, even though they were in a completely different setting.
I really liked those three characters Kanna, Uraha and Ryuuya.
It sort of makes me wonder if Yukito had stayed alive and only Misuzu had died, would Yukito and Haruko have gotten together?

Misuzu's level 3 overdrive in Eternal Fighter Zero makes me feel a lot sadder now.
It's recreated so faithfully...when she gets out of the wheelchair and walks toward Haruko and falls into her arms she says, "Goal."
But yeah, why did BOTH of them die.
Both.
What the hell!
I thought at least one would live, but one died to save the other and even though he did he didn't.
The thing is they followed the original game storyline almost to the letter.
It makes me sort of prefer the arcs where Yukito's still alive, like Kano's and Minagi's.
I hate Sora crow, he sucks.

It sort of makes me wonder how Kanon would have been received if they kept the true endings for everyone, i.e. not only Makoto bites it, but Shiori dies from her sickness (OHNOES), Mai stabs herself and Sayuri doesn't stop her (OHNOES x 2), Ayu isn't in the hospital but already dead (UGUU), and the only one who makes it out alive is Nayuki.

I wonder...how Clannad is.
I hear it isn't that great comparitively to the other two.
